David McWilliams
One of the pioneers of Irish pop/rock, David McWilliams found fame when a demo of some of his songs was heard by music industry entrepreneur Phil Solomon, who had previously managed The Bachelors and Van Morrison's band Them and also had close ties with pirate station Radio Caroline.
Solomon won McWilliams a contract with CBS Records, which released his first unsuccessful single "God and My Country" in 1966, before signing McWilliams to his own new Major Minor label. McWilliams' first album, David McWilliams Singing Songs by David McWilliams, was produced and arranged by Mike Leander, and reached # 38 on the UK album chart.
He quickly recorded a second album, David McWilliams, which reached # 23 in the album chart and featured the single "Days of Pearly Spencer”. Massive exposure on Radio Caroline and through advertisements in the UK music press in the summer of 1967 helped generate interest and sales in continental Europe, and the record topped the charts in France and the Netherlands, selling a million copies worldwide.
He released another album, David McWillams III, and several further singles for Major Minor, and toured widely in Europe. David Bowie once named McWilliams as his favourite songwriter. He moved to London, and released further albums and singles.
McWilliams moved back to Northern Ireland in the early 1980s. He performed infrequently after that, mostly in local bars.
A compilation album, The Days of David McWilliams, was issued by RPM Records in 2001.McWilliams died of a heart attack in 2002, at the age of 56. He was married twice and had eight children.
Nick Black's tribute show to David McWilliams can be heard in full on our podcast page.

SHERBET
For the better part of the Seventies, Sherbet were the Kings of Pop in Australia. By mid-decade they were undisputed rulers of the Australian charts and stages, and only with the appearance of the mighty Skyhooks was Sherbet confronted with its first serious rival. Sherbet were a classic pop band whose success was solidly founded on great musical ablility and sheer hard work, not just marketing hype. Sherbet remains one of the best-selling and most successful bands in Australian music. They produced some great original material and enjoyed a record-breaking string of hits, with an amazing run of sixteen consecutive Top 40 singles between 1971 and 1977. Sherbet originally formed in early 1969 and between 1971 and 1978 released 15 albums and 30 singles. Among these were Australian pop classics such as "You've Got The Gun", "Child's Play", "Slipstream", "Cassandra", "Life", and "Summer Love".
Melthoid takes us back in time to one of Australia's greatest acts as he speaks to Daryl Braithwaite and other members of the band in a very special 4 hour podcast you can download in four parts.

Opera Australia
The Spring Festival of Opera Australia is about to commence on 11 November with three totally different productions.
Madama Butterfly by Puccini
This is a well-known tragic opera, which in this production will star NicoleYoul in the title role of the young and innocent Butterfly and Rosario La Spina as the 'Love em and leave em' Pinkerton who is in reality, a ruthless destroyer of youth and innocent purity. The well know music and story never fails to engage the sympathy of the audience.
Otello by Verdi
Based on Shakespeare's tragedy this story of love and deception will star Jonathan Summers, Franco Farina and Kate Ladner.
Jonathan will sing the role of Ago, the worst villain in all of The Bard's plays is the perfect evil manipulator, which ends in death and destruction of two people who were deeply in love. Iago is the type of character the Commandment "Thou shalt not covet" probably inspired. Success of jealousy can be the case when one does not perceive the serpent being harboured in one's bosom. Jonathan will probably receive his well earned boos as he takes his bows.
This writer has often wanted to stand up and warn Otello about Iago, but will again have to watch Fraco Farino go towards his ultimate fate. The female cast includes Kate Ladner as Desdemona, and Roxanne Hislop as Emilia.
Verdi's music and the score are certainly going to be handled with style by conductor Giovanni Reggioli.
Orlando by Handel
This opera is now three centuries old and baroque. The question may arise, what relevance Does it have in today's world? The response is quite straightforward, be prepared to pay the price for choices one makes. Love can ruin the greatest mind and drive it to destraction and destruction. Dominica Matthews will sing the title role supported by Hye Seoung Kwon, counter tenor Tobias Cole (Orlando's rival) and Richard Alexander as Zoroastro.
The whole story is based on Ariosto's epic poem "Orlando Furioso" published in 1516.Handel was so inspired by the poem that he wrote three opera based on it, "Alcina, Ariodante and Orlando"
With Benjamin Bay conducting and Justin Way directing, we are in for a very different night at the opera. That is the real worth of any opera. It can retain its value/s centuries after it was written.
It also is a rare chance to see and hear an opera, which is not a standard part of the usualCompany repertoire.

Fatman Blues Saturday Nite 8pm to 10pm every second Saturday
The Fatman presents Blues music that doesn't give you the Blues. I am a new presenter at 88.3 Southern FM and am looking forward to presenting Blues, Rockabilly, Roots, Soul and Ska music on a fortnightly basis.
I cover music from the early American Blues of the 20's to the Chicago Blues of the 50's to the fantastic British Blues of the sixties right thru to today's contemporary Blues music.
I regularly play a strong mix of Australian and New Zealand Blues – anything from Billy Thorpe, Chain, Madderlake, Spectrum, Midge Marsden to Hey Gringo, Chris Wilson, Fiona Boyes, Collards, Green and Gravy, C.W Stoneking and Tex Perkins.
If you dig Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker, Rory Gallagher, Peter Green, early Rolling Stones, John Mayall, Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl, Little Charlie & The Nightcats, Charlie Musselwhite, Eric Lindell or any of the Australian musco's listed above, then listen in every second Saturday nite from 8pm for two hours of great Blues related music – you won't be disappointed.
Requests and feedback is welcome - so contact me at either fatmanblues@hotmail.com or www.myspace.com/fatman_blues
