Andrianakis Fitzroy Gallery 274 Fitzroy Street Fitzroy, 3065
If you have never been there, this is one of the delightful treasures of the inner city suburbs. The gallery has attached a delightful garden setting which is filled with works of art and is the perfect place to sit down and have a picnic or glass of bubbly/wine with some biscuits, cheese or pate (duck liver and brandy being my favourite).
New artists have an excellent venue to show their works and frequently make their first sales. At the launches, which I have attended over the years, I also found that many of the new artists (not all youthful, some were mature and deciding to try their talents) were very keen to hear what people really thought of the works. They were willing to listen to constructive comments.
It is an excellent place to see a huge variety of styles as unlike many galleries, this one is not known for preferential artists or particular type of art. All styles are encouraged and many budding artists have found it a place to start or stop their artistic enterprise.
Gallery Hours are Tuesday to Sunday 1- 6pm Phone 9417 3284

National Boer War Memorial
There is a committed band of people, who are dedicated to raising the funds for a National Boer War Memorial, as at present there isn't one. On ANZAC Day descendants of Boer War Veterans marched in the parade led by The Hon. Michael Baden Powell and The Hon. Wendy Baden Powell. Baden Powell's grandfather commanded the famous Defense of Mafeking during the Boer War and later founded the Scouting Movement. This group has as Patrons Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia and Air Chief Marshall Houston AO, AFC Chief of Defense Force.
Although individual States have Civic Bort War Memorials (Victoria has 53 including Ballaarat, Bacchus Marsh, Sale and the North of Shrine forecourt) there is no National Shrine. This is a situation the group is planning to change, by raising money and building one. Bearing in mind they were the first ramparts of what were to become the ANZACS, the current situation is not acceptable.
It is estimated that about $3 million needs to be raised to complete the Memorial by June 2010. Thus far the former West Australian Premier Alan Carpenter donated $30,000 the Queensland RSL $10,000 and the rest of the funding appeals are taking place allover Australia.
Donations can be made to National Boer War Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 42, Bulleen, Vic., 3102 or contact your local RSL and remember ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTABLE.

Rock and Vines NYE
This is a New Year's Eve celebration with a difference. It will feature 2 venues Hanging Rock in the Macedon Ranges and Rochford Winery at Yarra Valley. The same artists will appear at both venues by being flown between them by helicopter. The idea is that Hanging Rock with outdoor facilities will be larger with Barbeque or picnic, while Rochford has its restaurant facilities. As both are an hour from Melbourne, it is a matter of personal taste which one you choose to attend. Some of us will be booking our usual bed and breakfast and wisely be picked up from Rochford. The same facilities are also available in Macedon, but do book early. Buses are as above.
