Big band sounds with Rowly Hill
Rowly has been employed in the insurance industry for many years and is presently a Claims Manager @ GIO in St Kilda Rd.
His interest in swing music and jazz started at about the age of twelve when he would listen to the wireless and grow to love the big band sounds of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, & others and imagine he was playing the drums or some other instrument.
His preference for learning the skins was not realised however, when it was suggested that a career with the clarinet be followed.
Unfortunately this talent was not developed, although no doubt the highlight was receiveng three gongs on 3UZ Radio Auditions in about 1960 when playing “Stardust”, accompanied by the lovely Margot Sheridan on the piano!
Rowly’s favourite artists from the 30’s & 40’s are Peggy Lee, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton & Billie Holiday, whilst in the current era include Duke Robillard, The Dick Hyman Group, The Bob Wilbur Big Band & some local jazz groups.
His other hobbies and/or interests include traveling with the bride, red wine, golf, the grandkids & the footy.
