Dominic was born in a small village in Co Antrim, Northern Ireland, in 1952. Growing up during the Troubles, he attended the local primary school and later became a boarder at a boys’ grammar school in Belfast. He went on to graduate from Trinity College in Dublin, marking the beginning of his journey in community service.
Dominic’s career began in Belfast, where he worked in community development. In 1986, he emigrated to Australia with his family, initially working as a steel fixer on building sites before transitioning to a family support agency in Broadmeadows. His passion for education led him to Swinburne University TAFE, where he co-ordinated the community development and welfare studies courses for 20 years.
After his tenure at Swinburne, Dominic took up a position at Kingston City Council as the co-ordinator of the health and well-being team. He dedicated almost 13 years to this role before retiring from paid employment at the end of 2021.
In retirement, Dominic remains active and engaged. He is a member of Kingston University of the 3rd Age, participating in a marquetry workshop. He also volunteers as a broadcaster with 3ZZZ Multicultural Radio and is a member of Cumann Gaeilge na hAstráile, the Irish language group in Melbourne, where he is learning to speak Irish. Additionally, he enjoys spending time with wife Brenda, his two daughters and his five grandchildren.
Dominic’s life is a testament to his commitment to community, education, and family. We are thrilled to have him on the program to share his experiences and insights.
