Talking eye tissue donation on South of the River with Alli Harding – listen to the podcast
For somebody with a damaged cornea, a corneal transplant is often their last hope of restoring vision. This operation is only possible because somebody chose to donate their cornea after death.
South of the River presenter Alli Harding was joined in the studio on Friday 5 September by Heather Machin (pictured, front), the head of The Lions Eye Donation Service. The eye bank services establishes consent for donation, coordinates and performs donation surgery, and then evaluates and distributes donated corneas and other eye tissue.
Alli and Heather discussed the importance of tissue donation and the value of talking about your wishes with your loved ones, as well as the processes involved.
Heather has also just published her first book, Grandad’s Last Wish, which tells the story of a little boy and his grandfather, who wanted to donate eye tissue. The book is available through Amazon.
