Physiotherapist Steven Ooi explains Sarcopenia

In this podcast from the Be Strong, Stay Strong segment on Southern FM’s A Newsman and His Music, physiotherapist Steven Ooi from Kieser Australia is talking about Sarcopenia and how strength training can help you retain muscle mass as you grow older.
For the record: When Ash from Kieser Brighton did grip strength testing with some of the younger Southern FM presenters at the Great Bayside Swim 2025… Brandon Demura was well into the “strong” range with 63 kg (strong is anything over 55 kg) and Angus “Gilly” Gill recorded 49 kg. Brandon’s grip strength was attributed to his sport of sailing because he’s “always holding onto stuff”.

Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. It’s a natural part of aging, but it can also be accelerated by factors like inactivity, poor nutrition, and certain diseases. Sarcopenia can significantly impact quality of life by making everyday tasks more difficult and increasing the risk of falls, fractures, and other health problems.
